Euro Muscle Worries Americans

After almost two years of threatening to act against U.S. bans on Online gambling the European Union is coming good on its promises. This week a team of analysts and investigators will cross the Atlantic to view the prohibitive methods first hand and decide if they are anti-competitive for British and other European Online gaming companies. The trip is reported to have caused great concern in Washington.

The team will visit the United States Congress and members of the executive branch. Amongst their questions is why have the United States continued to prosecute companies protected under the WTO?

The U.S. has had several violations of the WTO and has done nothing to try and rectify the situation. The EU is trying to figure out the best way to protect their interests in this issue.

"This is a hugely significant piece of the fact-finding mission whose existence reflects a major point of tension between the U.S. and Europe over the integrity of international trade commitments," said Dr. Joseph Weiler, a professor at NYU School of Law.

The delegation coming this week is not coming in search of new information. They are seeking to gain knowledge into what they already know, that the U.S. has beached its commitments to the WTO.

"What can’t be accepted is that companies and individuals, who respected Congress in 2006 and ceased taking U.S. business, should still be under threat of criminal enforcement action today for conducting trade that they were entitled to do under the terms of the WTO agreements, that simply cannot be right," said Clive Hawkswood, Chief Executive of the Remote Gambling Association.

A Change of personnel in the Whitehouse combined with European action against the U.S. would surely see the ban on online gambling revised and possible even lifted in the near future.

That would be music to the ears of British online gaming companies who could then expose the massive market in the United States, something they have been prevented from doing by George Bush’s ultra conservative Government.
