| Private Poker Game Coming To An End After Forty Six Years |
|
People all across the country are playing house poker games with low stakes. The goal of the games in most cases is to have friends get together at the end of a long week of work and release some stress. Poker becomes secondary at most of these house games. The people that play in them usually play consistently whether it be a weekly or monthly game. The one thing that does not change is the need for the camaraderie. A house poker game that started forty six years ago saw their last poker hands dealt this past Friday. Grant Erwin was the founder of the poker club that has been meeting at various homes in or around Seattle for the past forty six years. The game has gone on for so long, that the members have changed over the years. There are still members that have been around from the beginning, but some of the faces have changed. The group has been through a lot together. Some of the members have moved, while others have passed on. The ones that remained, however, continued to get together and exchange stories. Seven of the groups members played their last hands together Friday. Age has caught up to many of the members, and the game was getting too difficult. Some players can barely see and hear anymore, making it difficult to play. While some believe it was time for the club to call it quits, others were not so sure. "I’m really going to miss all these guys," said Bob Gillespie, to The Seattle Times. "I’ll miss hearing the stories about their lives and their families. we’ve learned so much from each other over the years," he said. There was a time that the card playing actually paid off for the group. Instead of collecting their money at the end of the card playing sessions, they would simply leave their jars with their names on them. Erwin would then take the money and invest in stocks, with each card player receiving the amount of stock equivalent to what they had in their jar. The plan paid off with over $100,000 made from the stocks by the new millennium. Some of the players used the money from the stocks to pay for things such as college educations for their children. The game has ended on Friday night, but the memories of forty six years will forever live on for Erwin and his friends. Source:http://www.casinogamblingweb.com/ |
