New Country Planning to Operate Online Poker
Though gambling at the online casinos is legal in Finland, some in the Finnish government are hoping to start a government run internet poker gambling as a way to benefit from Finnish internet gamblers that use offshore companies. Certain sectors of the Finnish government are touting the benefits to citizens if the country begins to run a domestic online casinos company – or even a monopoly. Others in the government though are a tougher sell on the idea and feel that domestic-based online poker would only compound current gambling addictions.

The online casinos and gambling is an extremely profitable sector of the gambling industry, and some in the country are lured by the revenue potential in a domestic online casinos poker gambling site. In essence, internet gambling is not illegal in Finland, so current internet gamblers use foreign online poker sites. And if Finnish citizens are going to gamble at online casinos, then the Culture and Sport Minister, Stefan Wallin, wonders why the country isn’t benefiting from the activities.

On the other side of the situation though, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Kari Paaso, looks at the potential for increased gambling addiction if the country offers domestic online casinos gambling. Though the government would have more control over the internet gambling, a Finnish company would bring the pastime even closer to home for gamblers. Passo comments, "Domestic games would simply make everything even easier for gaming addicts. We will calmly follow the situation."

The possibility of an online casinos industry in Finland has many Finnish land-gambling companies eager to push for the licensing of domestic internet gambling licenses.
