| Placing Bets in Blackjack and Card Counting |
|
The blackjack table functions on the basis of protocol, most of which is for the security cameras that are recording all of the action. When a player places his bet for the hand, he should place the chips in a stack in front of his position. Sometimes there is a box printed on the table layout for each player’s bets. If the chips in the bet are of different denominations, remember to place the highest denomination on the bottom and the lowest on top with the other chips in the appropriate order. In most cases this will be the only bet that the player makes in the round unless certain situations occur when there are certain rules in effect. For example, if the insurance rule is used, the dealer may ask the player if he wants insurance when the dealer has an ace showing. If the player wants insurance, he places the chips behind his original bet. If the player wants insurance, he places the chips behind his original bet. If the player wants to split a pair, he indicates this by separating the cards and playing a stack of chips equal to his original bet next to the right side split card. Each card of the split has its own bet. A player that has a good hand can double down, if the rules allow. The player indicates his intentions by placing a second stack of chips equal to the original bet behind the stack for his original bet. These are the only situations involving bets in the game. Throughout the years many blackjack players have relied on the practice of card counting to keep track of the cards that were played. This is one of the most effective techniques when used in conjunction with basic strategy. Playing based on basic strategy lowers the house advantage to about one percent. Using card counting in conjunction with basic strategy lowers the house advantage even further. The card counting player can ascertain if the deck is rich in high cards or low cards, and can bet accordingly. Because of the effectiveness of this practice, casinos have taken many steps to guard against the practice. Players cannot use any mechanical or computerized equipment at the blackjack table. They may be thrown out of the casino or arrested. The player cannot sit at the table and keep a written record of the cards played because they too will be thrown out of the casino. The best the card counter can do is to count mentally and not be too obvious about it. Casinos are not favorably inclined toward card counters and have developed techniques to counter or defeat the effectiveness of card counting. Card counting is easiest and most effective when there is one deck used from beginning to end. Decks are now shuffled after every hand and there is multi deck play. They also use automatic shufflers. These techniques have basically made card counting a useless practice. The player can still keep track of the cards played but not like before. |
